A Journey back in Time
Today Libya does not boast of a reputation that is welcoming. The last five decades may have seen it fall into a pit that was of its own making. And now the country is slowly trying to shed its infamous past behind as it moves forward to a new chapter. Before this unhappy state of events came to pass, Libya was an extension of the cradle of civilisation as we know it today. No wonder that the Romans, Arabs and Ottomans found it worthy of plunder and conquering.

The place is replete with history that dates back over several civilisations. It was to discover these interesting bits of history that I once, before the recent events of violence came to pass, set out to discover. My job in the Wrongful Birth claim department ensured that I could take a month off every year. Perfect for such a trip where you should not be rushed as you explore and discover things to your heart’s delight.

I discovered proud people who were eager to share what little they had with a perfect stranger. Their hospitality overwhelmed me! You were welcome – no questions asked. A guest was honoured in much the same way as royalty would be. The haunting beauty of the land is also something that remains with you. The coastline on the Mediterranean side is out of this world and is a spot that the rich and famous frequented in the distant past.
With the oil wealth that it has at its disposal, it is a matter of time before it claims its lost glory once again. It now stands on the threshold of change and it is the people who will make a decision that can affect its future for generations to come. I sincerely hope that the choices they make are the right ones that will benefit citizens and the world.
